As part of its mission, Voci seeks to encourage, foster and showcase new and rarely performed music. We have commissioned and premiered a wide range of works from experienced and emerging composers, both local and international.
Recent Commissions
During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21, Voci leaned into its mission to promote new music for women’s voices by commissioning several virtual choir pieces. Each singer learned the music at home, recorded their part on a smartphone or computer, and emailed the recording to the composer who then edited it all together to create these vibrant and delightful final compositions.
In May of 2021, Voci commissioned a whimsical, cutting-edge new work titled “Are Women People?” from Assistant Conductor, Edna Yeh. The piece was premiered in Voci’s August 2021 Newsletter and an excerpt was included in the 30th Anniversary virtual performance on October 10, 2021.
In April of 2021, Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble, with collaboration with Canzona, created a recording of “Lark in the Clear Air” composed by Mitchell Covington (based on an English folk melody) with words by Samuel Ferguson (1810-1886).
In July of 2020, Voci commissioned a new choral work by Mitchell, “Alleluia, Adorare.” A virtual choir composed of Voci members, alums and a few friends created a recording of the 4-part a cappella piece. The response to “Alleluia, Adorare” has been overwhelming! People have called it “gorgeous,” “brilliant,” “rapturous” and “deeply spiritual.”
